When most Americans think about the best ski resorts in America, they tend to think of California, Utah and Colorado. However the Northeastern portion of America has a number of outstanding ski resorts, many of which are world-class destinations. The following ski resorts in the Northeast are the five of the best in New England, and why not bring your pet!
Stowe Mountain Resort, Stowe Vermont –Clearly one of the best ski resorts in America, the Stowe Mountain Resort ranks at the top of the best in the Northeast. This highly acclaimed ski resort boasts the highest mountain in Vermont, Mount Mansfield, at nearly 4,400 feet high and the entire region is very popular for skiers and families traveling with children. Although the population of the nearby town of Stowe is less than 5,000, there are plenty of outstanding restaurants and stores.
Killington Ski Resort, Killington Vermont –Could the top two ski resorts of the Northeast be in the same state, an hour and a half apart? Yes, Killington Ski Resort also is highly acclaimed, world-class ski resort. Interestingly, the population of the town of Killington is even smaller than that of tiny Stow. Killington is also very well known for its lively nightlife
Whiteface Mountain, Lake Placid New York – Arguably the best and most familiar ski resort in the Northeast is at Whiteface Mountain in Lake Placid. Whiteface features a 3,430 foot vertical drop, which makes it the biggest in the Northeast. Also not to be missed if you plan to visit the area are the Winter Olympic Museum the Hall of Fame, the Olympic Center and the Olympic Sports Complex. For those of you who remember the 1980 Winter Olympics, the Olympic Center was the site of the unforgettable hockey game where the United States hockey team upset the then #1 team in the world, the Russian hockey team. All of these structures are located in the Lake Placid area.
Sugarloaf Ski Resort, Maine – Not to be confused with Sugarloaf in Colorado, Sugarloaf, in the Carrabassett Valley, is by far the largest ski resort in the State of Maine and has the 2nd longest vertical drop (2,820 ft.) in the Northeast, next to Killington. Sugarloaf Mountain is also the 2nd highest mountain in the state.
Mount Washington Ski Resort, Bretton Woods New Hampshire – Mount Washington ranks amongst the top five in the east for snow, weather, service and for family programs, which makes the area a very popular choice for skiers and snowboarder.
